  • UXBN06 Talk – To Hamburger Or Not To Hamburger

    By in Talks, UI/UX on

Am 21.04.2016 war ich bei UXBN mal nicht in der Orga Rolle, sondern habe einen Vortrag gehalten:

To Hamburger or not to Hamburger

Was ist also wirklich dran am Hamburger Button?

Die Präsentation dazu findet ihr unter UXBN06 – To Hamburger Or Not To Hamburger

Falls ihr den Vortrag gerne live bei eurem Meetup sehen wollt, dann schreibt mir einfach.

  • SonicFileFinder 3.0 released

By in Development, SonicFileFinder, Tools on

SonicFileFinder is a free add-in for Visual Studio that allows a fast and convenient search for any file within every Project of the loaded Solution by entering the complete filename or just a part of it. The found file(s) can either be edited with a single keystroke or a Windows Explorer / CommandLine prompt can be opened at the file’s location.

    What’s new?

Version 3.0 is a compatibility release for Visual Studio 2015. I had to drop support for Visual Studio 2005 & 2008, because they have no support for the Visual Studio extension installer format. I am sorry for that.

But the good news is: You now got a single VSIX file for installing SonicFileFinder to all supported Visual Studio versions at once!

The changes I had to make were quite huge. So please try it out and get back to me if you run into any problems.

    • ADDED: Support for Visual Studio 2015
    • CHANGED: Migrated to Visual Studio extension installer (VSIX) format
    • CHANGED: Dropped support for Visual Studio 2005 and 2008

Download it on the SonicFileFinder website.

  • Apple Watch + watchOS 2 + Human = Love

    By in Gadgets on

tl;dr: Use Apple Watch with watchOS 2 (Beta), install Human and track all of your sporting activities automatically

I am using my Apple Watch for about 11 weeks and one thing bothered me every now an then: My steps are tracked automatically, but any other activities aren’t.

So, when driving my bike to work I have to start the Workout app every time before start and stop it after arriving. Needles to say I forget at least one step on a daily base.

    New Features in watchOS 2

This is where watchOS 2 (currently in beta; coming later this year) comes into play. Thanks to the new workout API in watchOS 2, 3rd party apps can add their activities to the workout data. Those activities are then added to your 30min-a-day training circle on the watch.

    Now for some Human touch

Human is a workout app that just works. It tracks walks, runs, bicycle rides and other activities automatically. Just install it and let it do its magic in the background.

Human is an all-day activity & calorie tracker that inspires you to move 30 minutes or more, every day.

Now with letting human track my activities, they are added to my 30min-a-day training circle without ever having to manually start and stop a tracking app.

    I really do love this!

    Final Thoughts

Of course you can have concerns about your privacy and sharing data with other apps using HealthKit. I am ok with it. At least in this case. The nice people over at Human are giving you access to the raw data they are recording every 7 days.

You decide whether you trust them with your data, or not.

  • Rewatching Objectified or Amping up Design Inspiration

    By in Design on

There is a documentary from Gary Hustwit I rewatch every now an then. It’s called Objectified and it’s a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them.

Though it’s about industrial design, it sparks my creative inspiration every time I watch it and it never get’s old. Even if you are not into design in any way you should give it a try. If you care about design in any way regardless of producing or just using it daily, you will totally love this movie.

It opens your heart for the immense beauty great design can deliver. And I’m not only talking about how it looks but how it feels and works. A carefully designed object never grows old. It’s one of the few things you will grab if someone would tell you that you got 20 minutes to pack before never coming back.

You can watch the full movie on the Objectified website. It’s also available on Netflix, Amazon Prime und iTunes.

For a first impression, you can watch a trailer on YouTube.

P.S: The fierce looking metal robot in the header is not from the movie, but one of the things I would pack if I only got 20 minutes to pack.

What would you grab in that situation?
